Lower Back Pain
Lower back pain can be caused by many things.
One of these is Sciatica. It is a pain that
can radiate through the buttocks and down into
the legs and as well as the feet. Another name
for it is lumbago. The lower back pain, sciatica
nerve pain starts from the lumbar roots which
emerge from the spinal column. There is an extreme
amount of pressure on this nerve and can cause
pain to rise up in the pelvis and travel down
the leg and into the feet.
The nerves are the largest nerves in the body,
about the same diameter as a finger. They branch
out in several points along the path. And when
these nerves become irritated, usually from
a herniated disc, pressure is put on that sciatic
nerve as it comes out of the spinal column.
Well,
now you have an idea of why it can cause lower
back pain. Sciatica pain can vary from one person
to another and it may be different with each
episode. You can't judge the next attack from
the one before. You can have flare-ups that
can last a couple of weeks or a couple of months.
Most of the pain will affect the lower back
and one leg only, but it can spread to the toes.
But there are some options as far as pain relief
goes.
The old stand-by of ice-packs always works well
for the lower back pain. Sciatica is a form
of inflammation which is helped quite a bit
by over-the-counter medications such as Ibuprofen
or acetaminophen. You can also try the non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs also referred as NSAIDS,
can help to reduce the inflammation.
If you are suffering from severe pain, you may
need to have an epidural steroid injection.
The injection is done around the nerve causing
the most pain. This gives immediate relief to
the inflammation and pain. They are only temporary
in relieving the lower back pain. Sciatica pain
can continue for an extended amount of time
and may require some physical therapy to help
ease the painful symptoms and help to prevent
future recurrences by strengthening and toning
the lower back.

1. Ice - In the first 48 hours,
you need to use ice to help reduce the inflammation
which is around the nerve. This can help to
stop it from getting worse. Use the ice for
10 minutes, then off for 10 and on again for
10 minutes. Keep doing this 2 or 3 times

2. Stretching – You have
a muscle called the Piriformis muscle. This
muscle has the sciatic nerve running through
it or along side it. By stretching this muscle
you are able to ease the pain quickly.

3. Pelvis Balance – This is
a great treatment for sciatica because the pelvis
is what keeps everything in balance. If your
pelvis is balanced, then the tension will ease
off all the other areas. You can do this by
lying down on the floor. Place your hand under
each side of your pelvis where you would wear
your belt. As you are doing this, notice if
there is more pressure on one side or the other.
If here is more pressure on one side compared
to the other, then your pelvis is not balanced.

4. Move – You need to keep moving,
not too fast, but move. If you sit for to long
at a time, your muscles will tighten much quicker.
Have you ever noticed that your pain is worse
in the morning after sleeping all night? When
you are able to move, this helps your pain ease
a little. This is why moving is an important
treatment for sciatica.
